Nido Community

The Montessori Nido environment is a community of infants ranging from 8 weeks old to 18 months. The adult to child ratio is 1:4 with a maximum of 8 children. This program is developed to support children who need full time care while their parents are working and is set up to emulate a home environment. The area for movement starts with activities for visual, tactile and auditory experiences while giving the space and motivation for freedom of movement through different types of mobiles, grasping materials, and rattles. As the child develops there are activities added to stimulate eye-hand coordination such as rings on a peg and containers that they can put things in and out of. Dr. Montessori often referred to the hand as “the instrument of the intelligence”. Therefore, abundant materials are offered for the experience of developing their fine motor skills. Just as at home there is an area for physical care, feeding and sleeping. The children each have their own floor bed and are supported in their individual sleep/wake cycles. We support the transition from a liquid diet (breast milk/formula) to solids by means of a child-led, scientific process.  This environment prepares the children for their work in the YCC environment once their individual sense of independence suits the transition.

"That tender, graceful little being—whom we adore and whom we overwhelm with material things, and who is almost like a toy to us—must inspire reverence in us."
