Grade 1

1st Grade Remote Schedule

Dear first grade community,

I am thrilled to be working with you this year as the First Grade Montessori Guide at Great Work. I love Montessori Elementary and working with children this age! When children reach this age they become very intellectually curious, asking “Why” questions as they attempt to unlock the mysteries of the whole universe. We offer them a wide range of curriculum to feed this in Language, Mathematics, Geography, Biology, Geometry, and History, all within a context of understanding the vastness of the universe and our planet. Around this age children also become very social and love to work together collaboratively, taking on roles and responsibilities and finding their place in community. As they learn to navigate the dynamics of working with other children we integrate a peace education curriculum, teaching children to get their needs met and help and respect the feelings and needs of others.

I received my Montessori Elementary diploma 6 years ago in Portland, Oregon. I have had the opportunity to teach overseas in Honduras, Hong Kong, and British Columbia and love bringing experiences, stories and anecdotes from these experiences into the classroom. I loved traveling, cooking, yoga and all the outdoor activities that Colorado has to offer.

This year will be unique in my teaching career due to the blended nature of online learning with in person. I also know it will be incredibly challenging for many families to support children through this trying time, and I appreciate your partnership in thriving through an unusual year together. Our first priority as a school is making sure all children and families feel safe and supported through uncertain times. While social distancing limits us in many ways in implementing Montessori curriculum, it is also an opportunity to find new tools and to grow as educators, connecting to a network of teachers world wide figuring out how to engage children in new and creative ways. Maria Montessori was at her core a researcher, observing children carefully and feeding them the lessons and materials they responded to most enthusiastically. I plan to follow the same type of curiosity and research based approach in implementing this blended learning model, looking at so many amazing new resources and feeding the children the tools, stories, and activities that make them love coming to school and learning.

I look forward to meeting you all personally soon, and in staying in touch via emails, phone calls, and our classroom website which will launch next week. Please don’t hesitate to reach out at any point with comments, questions, concerns, suggestions at
